(E) ACT I: The Hidden Mechanisms | Terry Miller, RPT, San Francisco, CA Chapter
In this class you’ll see why you’re hearing too much even when you’re listening to just one string. You will learn where to hear, and practice working with ‘the still small (tuning) voice’ within the wall of sound. Since intervals are the key to tuning we will discover that without focus you will hear the forest and not the tree, and that by just listening to an interval you cannot really tell if it is sharp or flat of where it should be. And we’ll examine the characteristics of tuning-friendly intervals.

(I) ACT II: Making a Workspace | Terry Miller, RPT, San Francisco, CA Chapter
The class will discuss the client’s/performer’s needs and expectations and the tuner’s goals; inspect the piano for harmonic inconsistencies, and even consider the constraints of the PTG Tuning Exam. These concerns distill into ‘Tuning Truths’ which are used to create a structured, standard Aural Tuning Workspace useful in all tunings. Participants will help mute the Workspace onto the class piano and the class will see how the Workspace aids the manifestation of ‘the Truths’ and the muting method focuses the attention of the tuner.

(I) ACT III: The Aural Tuning Lab: Exercising the Workspace | Terry Miller, RPT, San Francisco, CA Chapter
In the Lab the piano will be muted into Workspace mode. A preliminary tuning of the workspace notes will show how the selected tuning intervals trap themselves into tuned notes. Working within octaves the ‘But Will It Fit’ question shows the impact that one slight change can make on the intervals within an octave, neighboring octaves and elsewhere. Time permitting, the magic, clarity, power, and error-trapping of three-string open unisons will be examined.

(E) Are You ETD Dependent? | Ralph Miyashiro, RPT, San  Diego Chapter
We’ll talk about how to equip tuners with basic knowledge to enable them to tune without an ETD. Characteristics of properly tuned mid-range octave will be explained and illustrated. Volunteers can help construct a temperament octave, then troubleshooting/aural verification will be demonstrated. Tuning theory is not necessary nor emphasized in this class.

(E) Bulletproof Tuning | Steve Brady, RPT, Seattle, WA Chapter

(E) Measuring Unisons and Intervals Using Free Bandpass Filter Software | Mark Cerisano, RPT, Mr. Tuner Piano Service
Learn how to easily measure your unisons and intervals and know for sure how good they are. Using a free bandpass filter like Ocenaudio gives us the feedback we need to improve. Without accurate feedback, it is impossible to know what to improve, or even if we need to improve at all.

(E) Modern Tuning Stability | Mark Cerisano, RPT, Mr. Tuner Piano Service
This class will start with a basic description of stability, what it is, and how to measure it. We’ll then dive into new techniques to produce superior stability using non-speaking length tension analysis which considers physics, mechanics, and variables such as length of the non-speaking length, friction, twisting, bending, untwisting, unbending, etc. These concepts allow us to tune stable strings without the need to overuse hard blows which can damage our hearing, joints, and the piano.

(E) Pitch Raising: Myths & Facts | Wim Blees, RPT, Central, FL Chapter
Join in a round table discussion on pitch raising, what works, what won’t, and some of the untruths about massive pitch changes. Included will be a discussion of pitch raising techniques and charges.

(E) Techniques for Passing Part 1 of the PTG Tuning Exam | Bill Bremmer, RPT, Madison, WI Chapter

Rebuilders Gallery

We are excited to present, after many years, a Rebuilders Gallery. Separate from the Exhibit Hall, this is an area for both display and affection. In keeping with our theme Authority/Competency/Expertise, learn from both the accomplishments and failures of highly regarded rebuilders. There will be a mix of classes presented by rebuilders demonstrating with their rebuilt piano(s); classes by rebuilders without pianos present; pianos presented without classes; and even a class with a piano that has not been rebuilt. You'll understand that one when you see it.

Learn from rebuilders what they do, how they do it, and what parts they use. Share your knowledge. Pick their brains.
